Polyampholyte resins as new corrosion inhibitors in neutral aqueous environments

SKOCZYLAS A.

FALEWICZ P.

Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Institute of Inorganic Technology

and Mineral Fertilizers, Department of Chemical Processes and Reactors

The effectiveness of inhibitory protection of structural materials found in industrial cooling water systems can only be provided by multifunctional compounds. However, they have to meet many technical, functional and environmental requirements. The chemical properties of polyampholyte resins, as potential corrosion inhibitors of carbon steel in neutral aqueous environments, are presented. Electrochemical methods were used to determine the effectiveness of the inhibitory protection of carbon steel in model water with and without polyampholytes.

Keywords: polyampholyte resin, cooling water, corrosion inhibitors

Corrosion of ZnAl22Cu3 alloy in sodium chloride solution

MICHALIK R.

TOMASZEWSKA A.

WOŹNICA H.

Silesian University of Technology, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

The structure of the surface layer of ZnAl22Cu3 alloy subjected to a corrosion test in a 3% NaCl solution was tested. Objects of tests: base alloy, alloy with an addition of silicon and alloy with silicon addition modifi ed with rare earth elements. The samples were tested after potentiostatic examinations conducted at approx. 300 mV higher anodic potentials than the corrosion potential for 24 hours. It was found that on the surface of the alloy subjected to the corrosive reaction, a considerable diversity of structure and chemical composition from the surface to a depth of 600 μm was observed. Dezincifi cation of the alloy surface layer also took pl
