Austenitic stainless steels are characterized by unsatisfactory hardness and pitting corrosion resistance in a physiological liquid environment. In order to modify REX 734 steel functional properties, such as corrosion resistance and frictional wear resistance, low-temperature (≤380°C) glow discharge nitriding and carbonitriding processes were applied in combination with the process of producing carbon coating in one technological cycle. The work presents the results of examinations of produced layers surface microstructure, their chemical and phase composition as well as examinations of their functional properties, such as hardness, frictional wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Application of glow discharge carbonitriding combined with producing of carbon coating in one technological process influenced the improvement of corrosion resistance in Ringer's solution and significantly increased wear resistance of austenitic stainless steel.

The purpose of this examination was to determine the influence of heat treatment on ZnAl22Cu3 alloy corrosion resistance in the 3% NaCl solution. The subject of examination was unmodified ZnAl33Cu3 alloy. The tested alloy was: heated at the temperature of 185oC during10 hours with cooling in water, heated at the temperature of 380oC during 10 hours with cooling in water and heated at the temperature of 385oC for 10 hours followed by heating at the temperature of 175oC with cooling in the water. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests were carried out in the 3% NaCl solution.
After corrosion tests examination of the surface of the samples were conducted. Examinations have shown that the highest corrosion resistance is characterized by an alloy after heating at the temperature of 385oC/10h and the lowest after heating at
185oC/10 h.

Ochrona przed korozją w praktyce - Obscure origins of corrosion consciousness
KRÓLIKOWSKI A.

The corrosion consciousness is based of the knowledge taken from high school and university educations as well as information extracted from mass media. Graduates from several courses in technical universities acquire, or at least should acquire, basic information on corrosion and corrosion protection. However, the university courses do not offer specialistic knowledge on corrosion. Prospective corrosion engineers acquire this knowledge by the continuing education (post-diploma courses, workshops, trainings, apprenticeships at skilled professionals). Textbooks devoted to corrosion are also useful. However, some inconsistencies, concerning corrosion issues, occur in popular textbooks. Examples of such inconsistencies and resulting misunderstandings were shown. Some awkward pieces of information about corrosion issues, disseminated in mass media, were also indicated.
